Pop Montreal’s Symposium 2009

POP Montreal’s Symposium was again a great success this year. Quinn Caruana, the artistic director of the symposium, and I strove to create an atmosphere which would be inclusive and welcoming.

The speakers included amazing artists again this year such as Buffy Sainte-Marie, Roxanne Shante and Diamanda Galas. The stage was also used for a variety of performances and panels.

The venue was cool and industrial. It was important that our stage brought some warmth and created a strong focal point to the space. Using a series of colourful geometric shapes and spaces of negative space that let the colour of the wood come through I created a backdrop that grounded the stage space. The furniture was chosen for its clean lines to complement and not compete with the painted backdrop.
